A year ago a devastating typhoon hit the Philippines. Some of the students escaped in the nick of time, and others perished. Yet the work of Carey Outreach Ministries continues in spite of various trials and persecutions.

New Testament Survey

Dr. David Sloss recently taught a New Testament Survey module in Iloilo. He was delighted to see that younger men were being encouraged by our field co-ordinator to become pastors. He said that much appreciation was expressed by the students for the background material to the familiar stories of the New Testament.

Trials Abound, but God Provides

David wrote, "When I asked during the teaching how many of the pastors were facing persecution, I was surprised to see about 1/3 of them respond. This could have been persecution from outsiders or from family members opposed to their faith."

Like so many countries, the Filipino faces influences of corruption and evil masquerading as good. This is evident from the highest political offices to the small scale thief who is forced into providing for himself and family.

David added, "But the message of the Gospel is reaping rewards for the Kingdom as these men battle for the Lord in the many remote areas across this island nation."

The students with Dr Sloss

Field Co-ordinator Warlito reported, "There were two subjects offered; the New Testament Survey by Dr David Sloss and the Systematic Theology (Overview) by R.C. Sproul through video. Total students enrolled is more than 50, most of them new. They were all equipped and blessed by the Word of God taught by the lecturers. We thank the Lord for the new students, for the lecturers, for the Carey Outreach support, for the newly pioneering work and many challenges in the work of the Lord. It's our joy to see more workers being trained in Reformed Theology."

Thank you for your prayers

Dr. Sloss returned home with a cough and a cold - this too is a price to pay for ministry. Please pray that he will regain full health and strength. He wrote, "Again, it was a privilege to serve the Lord in this capacity and we look forward to his leading into the future."

Warlito, too, is grateful. He wrote, "Thank you for your prayers. Seven of the Pastors who graduated in their diploma will proceed in their Degree Course and now they are preparing themselves for their essay.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Sloss recently taught at the Carey Himalayan University of Theology in Kathmandu, Nepal, and returned to Canada with a heart full of joy to the Lord for His provision in ministering for the Kingdom. He was assigned to teach Old Testament Survey 1, and found that the 18 students had a great desire to learn.

Eyes were Opened to the Necessity of Studying the Whole Bible

Dr. Sloss wrote, "I found the background of the students, as is often the case, weak in Hebrew Scripture understanding. But as a result of the course, many students found the necessity to study the whole Bible an imperative. It is always encouraging to see eyes opened to the content of the Scriptures and this was particularly so in Nepal."

Further Ministry Opportunities for our Lecturer

The Carey field co-ordinators often have plans to use our lecturers' gifts and talents to minister to the people in the countries we serve. Dr. Samuel Rai, the President of Carey Himalayan University of Theology, provides a one year Bible school for pastors in Pokhara. He invited Dr. Sloss to teach for two days - the book of James. These students come from the length of the country and are passionate about the things of Christ.

At this school, there is also a five month program for ladies to learn Bible to be supportive as pastor's wives and also to learn the skill of tailoring so that they can be self-sufficient in terms of income.

Dr. Sloss was blessed by every opportunity he had to minister. He wrote, "These teaching assignments not only provide an opportunity to provide educational input for the students, but also provide opportunities to interact with them in such a way as to give counsel and encouragement in their individual ministries. I value this means of supporting the teaching role and find it helpful for students."

Breaking News regarding Egypt

Please pray for the two courses happening now in Cairo. Mike Ghiz is teaching OT Survey II; Peter Law is teaching Systematic Theology I. There was a disappointing turnout, as 80 or more students were expected and only 18 have come. Pray that God will be glorified, and that He will bless the students and the lecturers. Also pray for the meetings in Minya with a new group seeking to establish another school. Join us in praying especially that God would establish a firm foundation for the school in Cairo (students from around the Arab world).

Thank you for your prayers! The teaching modules held in the Philippines were a blessing to all. One lecturer commented that "involvement in this ministry has enriched me personally more than I can possibly say." Students expressed deep appreciation that they can get any theological training, and others have progressed through the diploma level and are moving into a Bachelor of Theological Studies degree. Read on, and keep praying!

Carl Muller: Systematics Overview

Our lecturer, Carl Muller, expressed appreciation for the personal enrichment he has experienced in serving the students in the Philippines. There were over 40 pastors at the training and almost half were new students! For many it was their first exposure to the doctrines of grace, and they received the teaching gladly.

Carl wrote, "The course was well received, I believe. Many new students expressed appreciation for reformed teaching. Others expressed appreciation for teaching per se, which is a rare commodity for them. For myself, the dedication and passion of these men for the ministry and the cause is powerfully convicting and stirring to my soul. I hope I am as dedicated and passionate."

Warlito, our field co-ordinator, added his thanks to the Lord:

for the new students and the desire to know more.

for the lecturers who sacrificed their time and efforts for His glory.

for the unfailing support of Carey Outreach Ministries.

for the five students who graduated this year.

for books and materials that can be used to teach and edify God's people

for buildings erected for the glory of God

Perry Edwards: The Book of Acts

As always, I enjoyed teaching at the William Carey School of Theology in Iloilo, Philippines. There were approximately 65 students in attendance and they all seemed very attentive and interested in the subject matter. There was good discussion and a number of important issues (such as the difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the filling of the Spirit) were clarified in the minds of the students. It was also a joy to have several new students attending the school for the first time.

When I go to the Philippines I always stay an extra week, so that I can travel to different churches and meet the pastors and their people. It is always a joy to worship with fellow brothers and sisters in the Philippines and get taste of the life they live. It also gives me an opportunity to assess the needs of the congregations so that I can give a report to my church in Canada, and raise funds to help the Christians in that far away land. I praise God for the privilege of participating in this ministry.

I was also able to bring my daughter Tiffany with me this time which was an eye opening experience for her. She taught the children in a tribal church, ate lizard meat, held a boa Constrictor around her shoulders, and almost melted in the stifling heat. She travelled with me from place to place and attended all of the services I preached at. I trust that the Lord will use this experience to plant the seeds of missions work in her heart.

Our Field Co-ordinator Requests Prayer

Warlito recently wrote, "We need prayers due to spreading of fever, dingue, and the new virus that we have. some school are closed for the meantime because of this sickness. My wife and two children are sick, and many students and pastors got sick also. Please help us pray."

Carey Has Made a Difference in the Philippines

We rejoice to see how God has worked in the Philippines, using Carey Outreach Ministries to push back the forces of darkness and to spread theological training far and wide. From humble beginnings with a few students, we now have 8 students moving into a Bachelor of Theological Studies degree. In the past they have earned diplomas, but this new degree program is equivalent to a North American undergraduate degree. These students of the Word impact the lives of many churches.

Our Filipino brothers and sisters are not without their trials. They've suffered through hurricanes and disease, through heartache and pain... yet they rejoice in the blessings of God!

Thank you so much for praying and giving, for joining in the work of Carey Outreach Ministries. Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

William Carey said, "Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God!"

We expect God will continue to bless our many students throughout the world.
We expect God will use His people to pray, to give, and to go.
As we attempt to teach and preach, to enrich and encourage,
we know that God will build His church!

Thank you for your prayers!

Pastor Bob Penhearow traveled to the Far East and was astounded at the blessing of God. The students, all mature leaders, are hungry and thirsty for the Word. Meetings planned with key leaders of large networks were profitable and encouraging. Read on, and keep praying!

Ephesian Bible Institute: Biblical Theology I

Our lecturer Bob Penhearow taught this course to about 25 students, all preachers and Sunday School teachers from different churches in a big city. Even though these students have been serving the Lord for years, a Christocentric perspective of the Old Testament was new to them. Pastor Bob emphasized a redemptive hermeneutic for interpreting the OT Scriptures in order to preach the Gospel.

The students are really thirsty and hungry for the Word. They are very intelligent and challenging. Most of them are between 25-45 years old, and they're the most active workers of their local churches. This group of students from the Ephesian Bible Institute represent a significant network. They are very committed and excited to continue their studies to complete a degree program.

Networks abound. Some of these students go to other areas to teach the Bible courses in other church networks. Lord willing, through them we may plant more Bible study centers.

Networking on a Large Scale

Bob met with a few of the leaders of a number of networks. One such network has 1,000 churches (over 500,000 people), and we hope to establish the Smyrna Bible Institute there in November 2009(D.V.). At that point, we will have 3 institutes in operation - with a fourth set to start in March 2010. This is an unprecedented opening to teach the doctrines of Grace to hungry, thirsty, eager students of the Word - and our students turn around and teach their networks! What an amazing opportunity!

God has opened these doors!

We need prayer that He would provide the resources to meet these opportunities - more teachers, more translators, more funds to cover all the related travel, materials and translation expenses.

The church in the Far East is desperate for a thorough grounding in God's Word.

William Carey said, "Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God!" We expect God will continue to bless our many students throughout the world. We expect God will use His people to pray, to give, and to go. As we attempt to teach and preach, to enrich and encourage, we know that God will build His church!

It is exciting to know that God is using Carey Outreach Ministries to impact the lives of people in the very land in which William Carey poured out his life, saying,

"Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God."

We were blessed to have David Sloss, Hugh Manary, and Bob Penhearow travel to India to teach, to preach, and to fellowship with the Christians in that great land.

Two Modules Taught at Kanigiri Bible School

David Sloss writes, "Once again it was a privilege to serve the Lord and the church in India by teaching two courses in Kanigiri Bible School. The courses taught were Old Testament Survey 1 and New Testament Survey, both of which were well received. I never cease to be amazed at the reception we receive in coming to teach. Students enjoy the interactive nature of the teaching with different methodologies used to keep interest keen throughout the hot days of lecturing.

Both exams went well although it is obvious there are major educational discrepancies between students. Some hardly know how to write an exam and are almost fearful.. Others do very well and know the material well."

The brothers we serve in this way are working diligently to reach their culture for the Lord's Kingdom, and it is a privilege to serve them in this small way. May God receive all the glory.

Pastors' Conference

Hugh Manary writes, "It was a privilege to be asked to minister to the local pastors at their two day pastors' conference in Kothagudem, India. About 150 pastors attended, and received encouragement in serving the Lord, servant leadership of their people, and in loving their wives. It is not always easy to speak through a translator, but we were encouraged by the reports we received from the leaders. It was also encouraging to see many in attendance wiping the sweat from their foreheads - it wasn't only the Canadians who were struggling with the heat!"

Evangelistic Meetings with Thousands in Attendance

During this same week, Dr. Bob preached at evangelistic crusade meetings held in Kothagudem. Over 6,000 people attended these meetings over the course of the three evenings of the crusade! In his preaching, Bob focused on the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ as seen in his interactions with the widow whose only son had died, the leper who came to Him for cleansing and in the parable of the prodigal son. Over 1,100 people filled in cards indicating that they wanted to know more about Christ, and they will be invited to a follow up "Truth Seekers" conference. Please pray for these people, that they would indeed attend the conference and that the Lord would be pleased to bring them into His Kingdom. Pray also that the Lord would provide funds to purchase Bibles and discipleship materials for them.

William Carey said, "Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God!" We expect God will continue to bless thousands in India with a knowledge of the truth of the gospel. We expect God will use His people to pray, to give, and to go. As we attempt to teach and preach, to enrich and encourage, we know that God will build His church!

Theological Training in the Arab World: A Seminary Opens in Cairo

In June, 2008, we reported, "Significant contacts have been made in two key cities, Cairo & Minya, where key leaders have invited Carey to teach. God led our men through a taxi driver to a pastor who haArabic Bibles built a seminary, but lacks qualified instructors. We are waiting on the Lord in this regard. Please pray."

All glory to God, Who hears and answers our prayers! Doors have opened for Theological Training in Egypt, beginning with Cairo, and with plans to open in Minya, D.V. Let your hearts rejoice as you read how opportunities abound to expand throughout the Arab World!

Planning and Proceeding through God's Provision

Carey's Field Co-ordinator in the Middle East, Mike Ghiz, writes, "The Lord is opening up great doors for establishing seminaries throughout the Arab World. Cairo had its start in January 2009, and another large denomination wants us to begin as a soon as possible in the Minya area of Egypt."

This, we pray, is only the beginning of many centers in the Arab World. The Cairo Institute will be drawing students not only from Egypt, but from Morocco, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. We have requests to open Bible Institutes in Beirut as well as in Iraq and Pakistan, which we are currently exploring. We believe we are going to see great things ahead for training leaders across the whole Arab World, and our prayer is that God would lead many of the students to minister in the Arab countries that do not permit western missionaries to enter."

Grace International Theological Seminary opens in Cairo

Pastor Gamal (Maher Abd El Mesih), the head of the Grace Churches, a 33 church charismatic denomination, began the Grace International Theological Seminary in Cairo this January, 2009. Beginning enrollment was 35 students, and the training ended with 24 committed students from 5 different denominations. Dr. Penhearow taught Intro to Systematic Theology, and Mike Ghiz taught Old Testament Survey I. This was a very successful start as the students expressed that they benefited by the studies. Pastor Gamal was also happy from the feedback from the students. Some students shared that they were challenged and persuaded by Dr. Penhearow's teaching on the Doctrines of Grace.

Next Session: Life of Christ and OT Survey II

The next session (Life of Christ & OT Survey II) will be held from August 24 to Sept 4, 2009, at a center built by the church, with 150 beds, a lecture hall with desks, and a dining room. They believe the student enrollment will be between 80 and 120 students. Pastor Gamal has asked us to provide 8 weeks of training per year.

In Minya, a Presbyterian denomination with a network of 10,000 is currently asking us to help train their leaders. Please pray. We need to find more suitably qualified lecturers and qualified translators.

God has already lead us to a British pastor in London who speaks Arabic! This pastor is willing to teach four modules per year for us in Egypt. Praise God!

Thank you for standing with us, for praying faithfully, and for giving of your time and energy to join in this great work! We at Carey Outreach Ministries have witnessed the Lord working as we trust Him and move ahead in faith. We need your prayers! The new students in Egypt need your prayers! Read through the newsletter again, and pray that God will move in the Arab World, using the students trained under Carey. Pray that He will send His workers into the harvest, for the fields are white and ready! We need workers!

Perry Edwards recently travelled overseas for two weeks' ministry. Perry counted it a privilege to teach in India. He writes, "I praise God for the opportunity He provided through Carey Outreach Ministries to visit India in October, in order to provide further training for the Pastors in that needy country. During my first week I taught The Book of Acts, and in the second, Early Church History. There were forty two pastors who attended the two week session. Although I could not understand most of them, a bond began to grow between us as the days went by. I am thankful to the Lord for His goodness and the privilege of serving him in this teaching ministry."

Praising God in the Villages

"During some of the evenings and on the weekend we visited several village churches to preach the gospel. It was a delight to hear the pounding of the drums (Their main instrument in worship) the loud clapping of the hands and the exuberant singing. The combination of the three was sometimes deafening as we crowded into small church buildings to worship. Although I could not understand the words the people were singing, it was a delight to my soul to hear them sounding forth praises to God in their own language."

Preaching & Praying ~ Praise God!

"I preached through a translator (not as difficult as one might think) and then the people lined up after the service for prayer. I laid hands on, and prayed for more people after each service than I think I have in my 15 years of pastoral ministry in Canada. It was a moving and enriching experience to my soul. I praise God that as a result of the village preaching, 9 people made professions of faith. I even had the opportunity to pray for several Muslim women who came to the Bible school and asked me to pray for them.

I rejoice in the Lord for the opportunity to plant the seeds of the gospel in their lives."

Baptisms

Perry continues, "I also had the opportunity to baptize 5 women in the Khrisna river. One of the women was nine months pregnant, so I jokingly asked the pastors with me if I had just performed my first infant baptism. They assured me that if it was an infant baptism, at least it was by done by immersion."

The opportunities for gospel ministry in India are huge. There are churches to be built, orphanages, old age homes, and Bible Schools to be established, and souls---a billion souls---who need Jesus Christ!

Perry testifies, "I am filled with joy as I think of India, and look forward to the day when I can visit that my brothers and sisters in Christ in that far away land, and preach the gospel to those who need to hear it."

An enthusiastic group of pastors and leaders from 13 churches in Ulaanbaatar and the countryside studied Systematics I and Romans, taught by David Robinson.

"First, I prayed that I would develop closer relationships with some of the men. The Lord was gracious as I had opportunity to preach in a church on the Sunday, accept an invitation to one student's home and to have lunch another student and his family. I thank the Lord for the relationships I was able to build.

Second, I prayed that the course would not only fill their heads with knowledge but would be presented pastorally so they would be encouraged as church leaders. There can be many discouragements in church planting and church life so I prayed that the Word would minister to their hearts and souls.

And finally, I prayed that they would have a burden to preach God's Word. One of my goals in teaching Romans was to show the men that when you preach through a book, the book lives for the Christian heart. I tried to press home the great privilege to preach the Word and as we faithfully preach the Word, God's people will grow and mature in the faith and in Christian love for one another."

Systematics I

David writes, "The first week we worked our way through teachings on Scripture, the person and work of God, the Trinity, Creation and providence. Having been there the previous year, I found that the relationships established helped create an openness to ask questions and create some relevant and necessary discussion. After the first week, one of the pastors from the countryside told me how he would take the teachings and bring them to the various churches to which he ministers."

Pastor Tsegmed testified at the conclusion of the teaching, "I think that the training was very good. During the time of training, I understood about many new things for me. For example: I learnt many Scripture's historical context and what was happening during the time. This training is much contribution to me to understand Biblical true meanings. Also it affected my sermon and sharing Word."

Romans

David writes, "The second week we traveled through the book of Romans chapter by chapter, watching Paul unfold the great gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the great privileges was spending time teaching the doctrine of justification so clearly laid out in Romans 3-4. It was a profound blessing to rejoice in the grace of God with these brothers and sisters."

The Field Co-ordinator testified, "Romans: Some Biblical scholars say: If we think New Testament is like ring, Romans book is diamond on the ring. We learned for five days but many things still there in this book. Students learned what is sin and about Salvation and forgiveness from the Romans. Also they learned about dedicating themselves for Lord and for His Kingdom. The Book of Romans is difficult to explain and to understand but students were filled with the heart of learning all these things."

Opportunity Abounds!

Mongolia is a country open to the gospel. In less than 20 years since the gospel began to penetrate the nation, an estimated 2% of a population of close to 3 million people have been saved by God's grace. There is now a tremendous opportunity to be part of the theological and pastoral development of a number of churches in this young but enthusiastic church.

"This training was very helpful to me. Also it increased my faith by the Word. I fully understood about the Lord's authority and human responsible. I was taught by the training about the real meaning of the ministry and discipleship. Also I was encouraged in the Lord by His Word. Thank you for all things what you are doing for us, May the Lord bless you!" Leader Altanhuyag

There are shrines to various gods throughout the land. On one afternoon, I visited the ancient city of Bhaktapur - located 15 km east of Kathmandu. It was established in the 12th century. It has eight geometrical corners, representing the eight mother goddesses (Asta Matrika) - the "protectors" of the city. It's discouraging to see the spiritual bondage of those who have "exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures" (Rom. 1:23)."

Man's Extremity is God's Opportunity!
Yet, God is calling out a people for His name in Nepal. I was encouraged by the reports I heard of how the church is progressing in the midst of difficult circumstances. I was reminded of what Paul says in Phil. 1:12, "Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel." What circumstances is he talking about? He's referring of course to his imprisonment. God used Paul's suffering in a Roman prison cell for the progress (or advancement) of the gospel - namely, the salvation of unbelievers and the edification of believers (Phil. 1:13-14). What a wonderful reminder that "man's extremity is God's opportunity!"

The same may be said of the church in Nepal.
God is advancing His kingdom in the midst of very adverse circumstances.
