May 2009 - Philippines
Thank you for your prayers! The teaching modules held in the Philippines were a blessing to all. One lecturer commented that "involvement in this ministry has enriched me personally more than I can possibly say." Students expressed deep appreciation that they can get any theological training, and others have progressed through the diploma level and are moving into a Bachelor of Theological Studies degree. Read on, and keep praying!
Carl Muller: Systematics Overview
Our lecturer, Carl Muller, expressed appreciation for the personal enrichment he has experienced in serving the students in the Philippines. There were over 40 pastors at the training and almost half were new students! For many it was their first exposure to the doctrines of grace, and they received the teaching gladly.
Carl wrote, "The course was well received, I believe. Many new students expressed appreciation for reformed teaching. Others expressed appreciation for teaching per se, which is a rare commodity for them. For myself, the dedication and passion of these men for the ministry and the cause is powerfully convicting and stirring to my soul. I hope I am as dedicated and passionate."
Warlito, our field co-ordinator, added his thanks to the Lord:
- for the new students and the desire to know more.
- for the lecturers who sacrificed their time and efforts for His glory.
- for the unfailing support of Carey Outreach Ministries.
- for the five students who graduated this year.
- for books and materials that can be used to teach and edify God's people
- for buildings erected for the glory of God
Perry Edwards: The Book of Acts
As always, I enjoyed teaching at the William Carey School of Theology in Iloilo, Philippines. There were approximately 65 students in attendance and they all seemed very attentive and interested in the subject matter. There was good discussion and a number of important issues (such as the difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the filling of the Spirit) were clarified in the minds of the students. It was also a joy to have several new students attending the school for the first time.
When I go to the Philippines I always stay an extra week, so that I can travel to different churches and meet the pastors and their people. It is always a joy to worship with fellow brothers and sisters in the Philippines and get taste of the life they live. It also gives me an opportunity to assess the needs of the congregations so that I can give a report to my church in Canada, and raise funds to help the Christians in that far away land. I praise God for the privilege of participating in this ministry.
I was also able to bring my daughter Tiffany with me this time which was an eye opening experience for her. She taught the children in a tribal church, ate lizard meat, held a boa Constrictor around her shoulders, and almost melted in the stifling heat. She travelled with me from place to place and attended all of the services I preached at. I trust that the Lord will use this experience to plant the seeds of missions work in her heart.
Our Field Co-ordinator Requests Prayer
Warlito recently wrote, "We need prayers due to spreading of fever, dingue, and the new virus that we have. some school are closed for the meantime because of this sickness. My wife and two children are sick, and many students and pastors got sick also. Please help us pray."
Carey Has Made a Difference in the Philippines
We rejoice to see how God has worked in the Philippines, using Carey Outreach Ministries to push back the forces of darkness and to spread theological training far and wide. From humble beginnings with a few students, we now have 8 students moving into a Bachelor of Theological Studies degree. In the past they have earned diplomas, but this new degree program is equivalent to a North American undergraduate degree. These students of the Word impact the lives of many churches.
Our Filipino brothers and sisters are not without their trials. They've suffered through hurricanes and disease, through heartache and pain... yet they rejoice in the blessings of God!
Thank you so much for praying and giving, for joining in the work of Carey Outreach Ministries. Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
We expect God will continue to bless our many students throughout the world.
We expect God will use His people to pray, to give, and to go.
As we attempt to teach and preach, to enrich and encourage,
we know that God will build His church!
Sincerely,
Janet Billson, Communications
